I am a creature of habit when it comes to food. I am the person the waiter asks, “The usual?” when he comes to our table. I cook the usual dishes at home, and friends often know what I will bring to a potluck.
Now there’s nothing wrong with shoyu chicken or custard pie, but I know that the culinary world is global and not confined to an island. Plus living in Texas is proof that I am not on an island.
So I have made a commitment to try one new recipe a week. It cannot be a mere modification or a spontaneous improvisation of something I’ve tried before. No, it must be a recipe that will stretch my ability and expand my palate.
I want to know that, in the culinary environment, it’s not a small world after all!
